The Lovers

Paintings created for the Queer|Art Book & Print Fair, Summer 2020. Celebrating queer love, the artist uses shapes, which are inherently gender non-conforming, in place of figurative identities to confront heteronormativity. She was thinking about gentrification and the histories lost when neighborhoods that were once safe spaces for queer and black bodies become police-zoned to protect white bodies and real estate. The artist wanted to show the movement and vibrancy of Harlem street life and queer Black bodies taking up space and the essence left behind.
